Dane Reynolds est arrivé épuisé en finale et n’a rien pu faire contre Mick Fanning. « You can’t win the first one (Final), can you? I got an I.V. before the Final. I was cramping up really bad. I’m not used to surfing this much in one day » a-t-il déclaré à l’ASP. Il a néanmoins signé les 2 plus hauts scores de la compétition (9,67 et 9,70).
Mick Fanning a sorti le tahitien Michel Bourez en 1/4, seul rescapé de l’Euroforce en phases finales, Slater en 1/2 puis Dane Reynolds en finale pour obtenir une victoire qui le relance dans la course au titre contre son ami Joël Parkinson.
Rob Machado a montré un surf époustouflant pendant les premiers tours où il a sorti les deux tenors que sont Taj Burrow et Joel Parkinson (voir la video contre Taj et la video contre Parko ). Il a été victime du surf futuriste de Dane Reynolds au Round 4.
Kelly Slater a bien fait croire qu’il allait remporter à Trestles sa 2e compétition de l’année mais Mick Fanning a stoppé net son élan. Le « divin chauve » a néanmoins envoyé des manoeuvres radicales dont lui seul a le secret comme cet aérial qui le fait voler au-dessus de la vague. Pas mal pour un jeune surfeur de 37 ans* ! Fataliste à la fin de sa 1/2, il a déclaré : « That’s just the way it goes. I wasn’t really feeling it today anyway. Someday you feel it and you’re on and sometimes not ».
